Vernon Parish School Board has announced applications for substitute teachers for the current school year is open.

Why would someone want to become a Substitute Teacher?

Many persons who are thinking about teaching as a career find that working as a substitute teacher gives them valuable
insights into the teaching profession.  Some retired teachers want to continue to teach and work with children.  Some
people want to find out more about schools and the educational process from which their children benefit.  But all have
one thing in common:  a desire to work with children and youth and to share in the exhilaration that comes from the
                     teaching/learning experience.

What is expected of Substitute Teacher?

The essential roles and responsibilities of the substitute teacher are detailed in the Pickering Elementary Substitute
Handbook. Briefly stated, substitute teachers are expected to carry out two responsibilities: follow the regular teacher’s
lesson plans, and maintain discipline in the classroom at a level in which learning can take place.  An additional
expectation is that these two responsibilities will be carried out in a climate of respect and caring for the students.

Pickering Elementary School will be seeking applicants to serve as a Substitute Teacher in August.  If you are interested in becoming a Substitute Teacher as well as a sub for cook, custodian, bus driver, bus aide and teacher aide, please visit Vernon Parish School Board, M-Th, 8:00 to 3:00 for an application, also applications are available at Pickering Elementary School.  See Carmen Holder for more information.
